Foaming spray in front of the bow, a fresh breeze driving the clipper with its magnificent white sail pyramid towards its destination. The crew gathers in the mess, drinks punch, sings Christmas carols, and many a rough sailor furtively wipes a tear from his eye. This is how Christmas was celebrated on the high seas in the days of the windjammers - or so the landlubbers think.
Robert Clauß (* 12.9.1894, + 5.3.1974), the last captain of the famous PASSAT, tells us here how it really was. He began as a sixteen-year-old on a cargo sailer and then became one of the most famous captains of the sailing ship era. Clauß brought the PASSAT from Hamburg through the Kiel Canal to Travemünde in January 1960, where it has been anchored ever since as a landmark of the Baltic Sea resort.
